In the first round of CSR funding, 66 schools applied for funds, and 25 LEA applications were funded to begin implementation in Fall 1999 (cohort 1).

In summer 2001, Connecticut awarded CSR program grants to 25 additional schools (cohort 2) to begin implementation in fall 2001. Currently there are 50 CSR schools in Connecticut, with the 25 cohort 1 schools finishing their third year of funding in June 2002 and the 25 cohort 2 schools begininning implementation in fall 2001.

Maine's CSR Schools Web Page

Maine requested, and received, a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education, allowing the state to focus CSR funding on secondary schools. In the first round of CSR, Maine funded 11 CSR schools (cohort 1) to begin implementation in fall 1999.

A second cohort of 11 CSR funded schools began implementation in fall 2001 and a third cohort of 11 CSR schools began implementation in fall 2002. Maine currently has 33 CSR funded schools.

Massachusetts' SEA application was approved in June of 1998, and the first cycle of 19 schools was funded for implementation during year one (fall 1998). A second cycle of applications was reviewed in spring 1999, and 51 additional schools were funded for fall 1999 implementation.

A third cycle of CSR program funding was awarded to 55 CSR schools in fall 2001 and a fourth cycle of 14 CSR schools begin implementation in fall 2002. Massachusetts currently has 71 CSR funded schools.

New York was among the first round of states to apply for, and receive, funding under Obey-Porter. The state of New York targeted 45 'high-need' school districts (including New York City) for CSR funding. Out of the 287 schools that submitted a CSR application, 85 were awarded CSR funding. Twenty-eight of the CSR grantees are in New York City and the remaining 57 are in upstate New York.

Puerto Rico

On October 1, 1999, Puerto Rico selected 49 schools for Obey-Porter funding. Twenty-six additional schools were awarded funding to begin operation in the winter of 2000, brining the total number of schools to 75.

Rhode Island made CSR awards to five schools in spring 1999. These five schools began implementation in the fall of 1999. Two additional awards were made in the winter of 2000, bringing the total number to seven.

Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands have received a block grant for CSR and are not participating in the grant process. The grant will support up to four schools, with funding beginning in September 1999.
