English Language Arts Unit/Lesson Plans

During the June, 2000 year-end meeting, working groups created sample lessons that addressed a particular ELA standard while using a particular effective practice lens. We used four sources of effective practice for ELLs in this activity. They were:

  • the University of Pittsburgh's Principles of Learning,

  • the Guiding Principles (from "Promoting Excellence," created by the center for Equity and Excellence in Education at George Washington University),

  • the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Environment Handbook or CALLA (Anna Uhl Chamot and J. Michael O'Malley), and

  • the applied research of CREDE-the Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

We share the lessons and unit ideas that were developed in the hopes that you will find them as interesting and useful as we did.
