Ms. Sylvia LaCerra, Principal, Principal
"Committed to Excellence"
PS 200 is a vibrant, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual K-5 school in Bensonhurst, with an enrollment of slightly over 1,000 students. Almost 1/3 of PS 200's students are English language learners (ELLs) from all over the world; the largest language groups are: Russian, Chinese, Spanish and Urdu.
The principal writes: "We educate the whole child. We teach Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We also teach children to be productive citizens. We build a sense of community and feel that children will give back to the community when they are older. We teach respect for life, individuals and the environment."
P.S. 200 offers Russian bilingual classes in grades K-5, including a gifted program, as well as pull-out and push-in ESL instruction for speakers of other languages. Other highlights of its programs include Studio-In-A-School, Legal Lives, and Readers' Theater. Among its afterschool activities are: an evening recreational program through the 62nd Police Precinct, Virtual Y, homework help, and Project Read. Community partners include the Metropolitan Opera and the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
For several years in a row, PS 200's ELLs have outperformed their peers city-wide
in attaining proficiency in English and in showing mandated gains in English.
Other student performance highlights for PS 200 are: exceptionally high attendance
(almost 94%); performance on the Grade 3 State reading and mathematics tests
that were far above similar schools and schools city-wide. Almost 63 percent
of LEP students attained proficiency in English on the LAB in spring 1998, far
above similar schools and schools system-wide. Their pattern of LAB gains was
similarly strong 90% of students made mandated gains in English proficiency.
Seventy percent of ELL students at PS 200 scored at or above grade level on
the New York City Mathematics test in spring, 1998, well above similar schools
and the city as a whole.
