P.S./I.S. 189 is a K-8 school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the heart of the Haitian community in New York City. The school grew out of a community-based effort to offer children a bilingual/bicultural education that began over ten years ago. With large Haitian and Latino populations, P.S. 189 remains today one of the few schools in New York with bilingual Haitian Creole classes as well as bilingual Spanish classes. All regular classes also study either French or Spanish. Almost 1/5 of P.S. 189's students are English language learners. Hallways and bulletin boards throughout the school are alive with reflections of the rich cultural heritages of both the Caribbean and North America.
The academic achievement of P.S. 189's students is high. In 1999 their scores were above average for New York City schools on the New York State English and Math exams, and on the New York City performance assessments. Likewise, its English language learners outperformed ELLs in other NYC schools on the city English and Spanish reading tests.
Some of the programs that P.S. 189 is especially proud of are: the Scholar's program, the ARISTA program and Project Arts. The school also offers an extended day program in reading and math, and a strong computer program. The school also offers parents classes in ESL, computers, Family Math, Family Science, and preparing children for reading and math tests.
P.S.189's community partners include: Brooklyn College, Banco Popular, Medgar Evars College, Teachers and Writers, Young Audiences New York, and the New York State Mentoring Program.
